The adductor muscles are a group of five muscles that primarily function to adduct the femur at the hip joint. But they also generally assist with flexion of the hip joint. However, the adductor magnus muscle also assists in hip extension. It uses a long bony ridge on the back of the femur known as the linea aspera, which basically means rough line. The primary actions of adductor magnus are adduction and medial rotation of the thigh at the hip joint.
The anterior fibers of the adductor magnus also assist in flexion and the posterior fibers assist in extension. The adductor magnus acts like a shelf for the other adductors to sit on. The adductor group is composed of the pectineus, adductor longus, adductor brevis, gracilis, and adductor magnus.
